Avila Raises Awareness for Breast Cancer

Avila Raises Awareness for Breast Cancer

By Julie Gale

October is known as Breast Cancer Awareness month.  Avila took part in celebrating breast cancer awareness  by having a raffle and pumpkin decorating contest in Hodes Center  during the Oktoberfest celebrating from 11:00am to 1:00pm today.  The event was put on by PEACH, Peers Educating Avila About Counseling and Health.  Students were asked to stop by for free food and rootbeer and to enter the raffle drawing.  All the proceeds from the raffle went to the American Cancer Society.  The prizes were quite elaborate this year.  The first prize was the “Prepare for Class in Pink” valued at $70.  This prize inclueded a pink book bag, pink and white polka dot desk calendar, and pink and white polka dot office supplies.  The second give away was the “(4) Pack Your Lunch in Pink” valued at $35.  This prize contained a lunch bag, tumbler, gift card to Hy-Vee and a koozie.  Another prize called “Peaceful and Cozy in Pink” was a pink bed set.  There was a “Pamper Yourself in Pink” package that was filled with all sorts of Bath and Body Works product and candles.  And the last prize was the “Pink-a-go-go” valued at $75.  This prize was a pink carry on bag, two small jewelry cases, a wallet, sunglasses, and a travel mug.  Student organizations were also asked to participate by decorating a pumkin with the breast cancer awareness theme.  Visitors were able to vote for their favorites.  Sophomore Helen Bui enjoyed stopping by Oktoberfest to take a break from classes and the cooler weather.  “I think it’s great that they (PEACH) put this on for us.  It’s a fun way to raise awareness and celebrate Oktoberfest.”
